Newsletter October

In the October issue of our twice-yearly newsletter, you can read about the following topics:

Five Lakes Network launched in the Lusatian Lakeland
The launch of the new Five Lakes Network in summer 2026 marks another milestone in the development of the Lusatian Lakeland. Lake Senftenberg, Lake Geierswalde, Lake Partwitz, Lake Sedlitz and Lake Großräschen now form one interconnected waterway. The navigable linking canals have created new opportunities for boating tourism, water sports and holidays by the water. In September, long-distance swimmer Pavla Petrová highlighted the connection between the former open-cast mining pits in a very special way by swimming across all five lakes.

Historic bathhouse in Beelitz-Heilstätten becomes a venue for media art
After years of vacancy and various temporary uses, a new chapter has begun for the historic bathhouse in Beelitz-Heilstätten. In September 2026, “NEBULA” opened as a permanent venue for contemporary media art. Immersive installations incorporating light, sound, projections and digital media engage with the architecture and history of the listed building.

Ten years of Museum Barberini in Potsdam
Museum Barberini will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2027. Since opening in January 2017, the art museum on Alter Markt has developed into one of Brandenburg’s most important exhibition venues and an internationally renowned destination for art lovers. Its programme centres on outstanding temporary exhibitions and the permanent presentation of museum founder Hasso Plattner’s collection of Impressionist art.

Kleist Year 2027 in Frankfurt/Oder
Next year, Brandenburg will mark the 250th anniversary of Heinrich von Kleist’s birth with an extensive programme of events. The main focus will be on Frankfurt (Oder), the city of his birth and studies, which together with the neighbouring Polish city of Słubice will host exhibitions, academic conferences, literary events, educational activities and cross-border projects. Entitled “Kreuzungen – Intersections. 250 – Kleist”, the anniversary year will offer new perspectives on one of the most fascinating and unconventional authors in German literature.

Victorian organ sound meets North German Brick Gothic in Prenzlau
After more than eight decades, St Mary’s Church in Prenzlau in the Uckermark once again has a historic organ. Built in 1904 by the renowned London firm William Hill & Son, the organ—with 38 stops, three manuals and pedals—returned to musical life in the middle of the year after decades of silence. St Mary’s Church lost its previous organ in a fire during the Second World War in 1945. Reconstruction of the church began in the 1990s and culminated in the completion of its vaulting in 2020. The new organ loft and Hill organ now form the crowning achievement of this long process.

Brandenburg wine is blessed with sunshine
Does good German wine only come from the Rhine, Moselle or Saale-Unstrut regions? Of course not. At around 50 hectares, Brandenburg’s vineyard area may be tiny compared with Germany’s major wine-growing regions, but the abundant sunshine allows grapes of excellent quality to ripen here. Thanks to its continental location, Brandenburg enjoys more hours of sunshine per year on average than Rheinhessen or Rhineland-Palatinate.

Birdwatching in Brandenburg
Brandenburg is one of Germany’s most important breeding areas for cranes. The largest breeding populations are found in the lake- and moor-rich landscapes of north-eastern Brandenburg, particularly in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve and the Uckermark Lakes Nature Park. In January, whooper swans migrating from the Baltic region arrive and spend the winter primarily in the Lower Oder Valley National Park.
