Another Art-Museum in Potsdam – The Minsk

THE MINSK, a new museum of modern art in Potsdam, will open its doors in spring 2022. At its heart is an extensive collection of paintings from the GDR, compiled over the years by Hasso Plattner. The opening exhibition will present the work of two artists: painter Wolfgang Mattheuer (born 1927 in Reichenbach/Vogtland; died 2004) and photographer and film-maker Stan Douglas (born 1960 in Vancouver). Over the years, Hasso Plattner has bought numerous paintings of landscapes and gardens by Wolfgang Mattheuer. Last year he bought a series of photographs of allotment gardens in Potsdam. In autumn 2022, THE MINSK will hold a large Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt retrospective to celebrate the artist´s 90^th birthday. Her work includes “typewritings”, prints, collages and paintings.

From the very beginning, the “Minsk” restaurant was also an event and music venue. In keeping with this, there are plans to hold concerts, readings, and other events in the building. An exhibition in spring 2023 will focus on jazz musician Louis Armstrong´s concert tour of the GDR in 1965. The terrace restaurant was built between 1971 and 1977 to plans by Karl-Heinz Birkholz. It is currently being restored by the Hasso Plattner Foundation and prepared for use as an art museum. The 900 sqm of exhibition space inside the building will have ideal temperature, humidity and lighting conditions. The open design of the pillared halls on two floors, in combination with moveable walls, will mean that the MINSK can easily be adapted to meet the requirements of the individual exhibitions. The MINSK bar, terrace and foyer will also be open to visitors, who do not visit the exhibition. In this way, the MINSK will again serve as a meeting place for Potsdam. https://dasminsk.de/de/
